Sulphate is a constituent of TDS and may form salts with sodium, potassium, magnesium and other cations. Sulphate (so4-2) is widely distributed in nature and may be present in natural waters at concentrations ranging from a few to several hundred milligrams per liter. Sulphate can cause scale build-up in water pipes. Sulphates are also food for the Anaerobic slime formers the sulphate reducing bacteria which are responsible for pitting type of corrosion in pipes.
